Test Sieves

Test sieves usually have a round frame, in sizes that range from 3 inches to 18 inches (and the metric equivalents) in diameter. Woven wire mesh with prescribed openings is the most common test sieve media. This is followed by perforated plate and electroformed material. These are the most common media used for sieve testing.


Woven Wire Mesh Sieves

Woven wire mesh is the most frequently used material for test sieves. Because it is a woven material, sieve wire mesh has the potential for significant variation in openings for any nominal size. Standards organizations such as WUZHOU KINGDA has developed inspection procedures to certify the status of the mesh.


Most wire mesh sieves are constructed for general use. However, there are several specialized sieve types designed for testing such commodities as grain and coffee.


Sieve Analysis Test

A sieve test is performed by first assembling a stack of interlocking sieves. In this stack, the sieve with the largest openings is at the top and each lower sieve will have a smaller opening than the one above it. A pre-weighed sample of the material to be tested is placed in the top sieve. This sieve stack is the shaken until all all the material has been either retained on a sieve or passed through. The material retained in each sieve is weighed and compared to the weight on the other sieves. A sieve test analysis or distribution is calculated which shows the proportion of each particle size category in the sample.
