Paint your empty basket outdoors using spray paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Spray it with a clear acrylic sealer to give it shine and prevent the paint from chipping easily. Allow the fruit basket to dry for a couple of days before putting the fruit in it.

Glue small, flat, decorative embellishments to the fruit basket base. Use a hot glue gun to affix craft gems, bows, die-cut letters that spell out the recipient's name, or use lightweight, flat balsam wood shapes. You can paint the wood shapes to match the basket or occasion.

Hot glue lace, strings of pearls or beads around the edge of the basket for an attractive trim.

Wrap beads or ribbons around the fruit basket handle. Use a hot glue gun to affix them so they don't slide out of place. Start at one end, wrapping your strand around the handle multiple times until you reach the other end. Then, start at the other end and go in the opposite direction for a crisscross pattern. Top it with a big gift bow, or make a bow out of wire ribbon.

Make decorations that you can stick into the fruit basket between the fruits. Tie bows onto a pipe cleaner cut in half, or a short length of floral wire, then slip the wire in between the fruits so that the bows lay against them. For an autumn basket, wrap wire around small pine cones and cinnamon sticks, and slip them between the fruits. Use silk flowers on wire stems, such as poinsettias or rose buds. Sprigs of fresh herbs, such as rosemary, mint or sage, add a pleasant scent to your basket.

Wrap your gift fruit basket in transparent, tinted cellophane. Tie it at the top with a big bow. The added bonus is that it will keep the fruit intact during transit.
