Fix Leaky Sink Strainers

A sink strainer is an assembly that connects the drain to the sink. Leaky sink strainers are usually caused by a breach in the bond that seals the strainer's body to the sink. This is because the rubber gasket, friction ring or plumber's putty has become worn and can no longer make the assembly watertight. To replace these components, you must disassemble the entire sink strainer assembly. If the strainer basket is damaged, then you should replace it, along with the gasket, friction ring and plumber's putty.

Instructions

1. Remove the tailpiece. Turn the slip nuts at both ends of the drainpipe counterclockwise, using channel-type pliers.

2. Remove the lock nut by turning it counterclockwise with a spud wrench. Tap the lock nut gently with a hammer to loosen it if needed.

3. Remove the sink strainer assembly from below the sink by pulling it down with your hand. Pull the strainer basket from above the sink.

4. Remove the old plumber's putty from the sink strainer by scraping it off with a putty knife. Remove the old plumber's putty from the rim of the strainer basket if the basket is not damaged. Replace the strainer basket with a new one if it has cracks or is worn. Purchase a new rubber gasket, friction ring and plumber's putty.

5. Roll a snake of plumber's putty and fit it around the sink drain. Set the strainer basket back in the drain hole. Press the rim of the basket so it sits snugly into the plumber's putty.

6. Work under the sink to reassemble the sink strainer assembly. Fit the rubber gasket around the bottom of the strainer. Fit the friction ring, and then the lock nut and slip nut to the bottom of the strainer. Attach the tailpiece to the strainer by turning the slip nut clockwise with channel-type pliers. Attach the tailpiece to the drainpipe by connecting them with a slip nut. Tighten the slip nut by turning it clockwise with channel-type pliers.

7. Fill the sink with water. Look for leaks below the sink. Let the water drain. Check for leaks below the sink. If there are leaks, tighten the slip nuts a quarter-turn at a time, and then continue to retest until no leaks remain.
