Chicken wire rack is commonly used to protect plants from wildlife. Because not all wildlife casually walks up to ornamental plants, sink the chicken wire rack at least 1 foot deep to prevent burrowing pests from coming into contact with your plants. Pick 1/4- to 1/2-inch-mesh chicken wire, so animals are unable to squeeze through the fence.
Instructions
1 Remove all weeds and grass from around the plants. Other vegetation will compete with your plants for the soil's nutrients. It will be harder to access around your plant when the chicken fence has been installed.
2 Dig a trench around the plant least a few inches away from the base of the plant. Use a spade or shovel for digging at least 1 foot deep. Spray the area with a garden hose to make the soil softer for digging.
3 Cut the chicken wire rack with wire cutters so that it easily wraps around the plant. Overlap the chicken wire if it is a mesh smaller than 1/4 inch.
4 Place the wire into the soil. Hold the mesh up or have someone hold the mesh as you pack the backfill into the trench. Ensure that the chicken wire is not touching the ornamental plant or tree in any way.
5 Prune off vegetation pressing on the fence, using bypass shears, or move the fence back a few inches to allow for plant growth.
