Instructions

.Place a bucket under the drain pipes. The bucket will catch any residual water in the line when you disconnect the drain from the kitchen sink strainer.

.Use a pair of channel lock pliers to remove the slip nut that secures the sink trap to the tailpiece drain pipe attached to the sink strainer. Loosen, but do not remove, the slip nut connecting the sink trap to the drain pipe coming out of the wall. Push the sink trap out of the way. Remove the slip nut that connects the tailpiece to the sink strainer with the channel lock pliers. Remove the tailpiece and set it out of the way.

.Place the blade of a flathead screwdriver on a protruding notch on the lock nut that secures the sink strainer to the sink. Tap the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer to loosen the nut. Once the nut is loosened you can remove it by hand.

.Tap the sink strainer from under the sink with a mallet or the side of the hammer. This will dislodge the sink strainer from the sink. Go up to the sink and pull the sink strainer out of the sink hole. Use a putty knife to remove any residual plumber's putty from around the sink hole.

.Place some plumber's putty in the palm of your hand and roll it into a thin rope. Place the rope of plumber's putty underneath the flange of the new sink strainer. Set the sink strainer into the sink hole and press it down flush to the sink. Go under the sink and place the friction washer and rubber gasket over the protruding threads of the sink strainer. Thread the lock nut onto the sink strainer and tighten it down with a pipe wrench.

.Wrap plumber's tape around the exposed threads of the sink strainer. Set the tailpiece into position on the bottom of the sink strainer and secure it with the slip nut. Move the sink trap back into position under the tailpiece and reconnect it using the slip nut. Tighten down all three slip nuts with the channel lock pliers.

.Place the sink drain stopper in the drain and fill the sink with 4 inches of water. Pull the sink drain stopper out and let the water drain while you look at the connections under the sink. Make sure that you have no leaks and tighten where necessary.
